Have fun playing with a Gelli monoprint plate in this workshop…it has an appealing gelatin texture. You’ll create monoprints with luscious surfaces containing myriads of unexpected colors, patterns and textures. You’ll end up with a pile of monoprints that can be enjoyed simply for themselves, or used as a jumping off for a new piece altogether. Use your prints as collage, in art journaling, or for greeting cards. Or the monoprint may be further altered with other media such as watercolor, pastels, pencil, or added texture. We’ll be using Golden Artist Colors in OPEN and High Flow acrylics, plus stencils both commercial and ones we make ourselves.

Getting Familiar with Oil Pastels using Color & Shape

This workshop focuses on the use of oil pastels

Oil pastel is a fascinating medium that can be used both for drawing and painting techniques. In this 2-day workshop, learn ways to use the medium and explore how oil pastel can be manipulated and adapted to each individual’s means of expression.

We’ll begin with simple exercises to become familiar with tools and concepts and create a still life using the techniques we’ve learned. We’ll explore seeing color values, mixing color for different effects, making marks to create texture, composing with shapes, and creating volume through understanding color value.

Each person’s style will evolve as we create from our imagination using abstract or realistic approaches, and become familiar with suggesting reality through working with abstract marks. We’ll work to each student’s ability, have fun, grow our skills and confidence, and encourage each other by sharing the experience. Good for beginners.

Date: to be scheduled

Where: At my studio in Northeast Portland

Cost: $159, which includes a materials fee.
